How long local SEO takes is the question every owner asks and almost nobody answers honestly, because the honest answer is uncomfortable: very little visible happens in month one, quite a lot happens underneath, and the businesses that quit do so at exactly the point the work starts paying.
Here is what the first ninety days actually looks like when it is being done properly.
Month One: Nothing Visible, Which Is Correct
The first month is spent on things that do not move rankings by themselves but block everything that does. The Google Business Profile gets built out properly. Business details get made identical everywhere they appear. Technical faults get found and fixed.
None of that produces a ranking change you can screenshot, and it is the reason the following two months work at all. An agency showing you dramatic month-one improvements is usually showing you a metric that was always going to move, like impressions on searches for your own business name.
- Profile categories, services and service areas set correctly, which is the highest-leverage hour in the whole engagement.
- Citation cleanup, so your address and phone number agree across every directory that has them.
- Technical fixes: speed, crawl errors, and the structural problems that cap everything published later.
- A review system that asks every satisfied customer, at the moment the work finishes.
Month Two: The First Real Signals
This is where the work starts showing, though usually not where people are looking. Rankings for your main head term will probably not have moved. What moves first is the long tail: specific, low-competition searches that were never on your radar.
Watch impressions rather than positions. A profile appearing in three hundred more searches a week than it did last month is working, even if nothing is on page one yet. Rankings are a lagging indicator of visibility, not the other way round.
The month-two conversation is always the same. Nothing has moved, and I show them impressions are up sixty percent. That is the work landing, it just has not surfaced yet.

Month Three: Movement, Unevenly
By the third month you should see genuine map pack movement on the less contested searches, and the first enquiries that can be traced to it. What you will not see is uniform improvement, and that unevenness is informative.
Some areas move quickly because nobody else is targeting them properly. Others sit still because a competitor has been building reviews for four years. That pattern tells you where the winnable ground is, and it should change the plan for months four through six.
What Will Not Have Happened Yet
- Top three for your most competitive term. In a contested category that is a six to twelve month proposition, and anyone saying otherwise is selling.
- A settled position. Local rankings move constantly, and week-to-week fluctuation at this stage means nothing.
- Meaningful review volume, unless you have been asking properly since day one. This is the slowest input and the one most within your control.
- Authority. Links and local trust accumulate over quarters, not weeks.
What To Watch Instead Of Rankings
Rankings are the last thing to move and the first thing everyone checks, which is a bad combination. Four better signals:
- Profile impressions and the searches producing them. The earliest honest indicator.
- Calls, tracked properly. Most local businesses take enquiries by phone and never attribute them, then conclude nothing is working.
- Which pages people land on. If it is still only the homepage, the service and area pages are not doing their job yet.
- Review velocity. Four honest reviews a month beats a hundred from three years ago, and it compounds.
Where The Timeline Actually Breaks
The engagements that take much longer than ninety days to show anything usually share one of three problems: the site was too slow or too broken for content to matter, the business is targeting a metro-wide term instead of the suburbs where it could win, or nobody has been asking for reviews.
The second is the most common and the easiest to fix. Businesses that commit to their own area rather than the whole metro get there faster and hold it longer, which is why we build a real page for each area rather than one that lists them. You can see the shape of that in our work on Kansas City, Overland Park and Lenexa, and the same logic runs through our Milwaukee work.
A Fair Way To Judge It At Ninety Days
Ask three questions. Are you appearing in more searches than you were? Are the searches the right ones? Is anything arriving that would not have arrived before?
Three yeses means it is working and needs more time. Two means the targeting needs adjusting. None, after ninety days of genuine work, means something is wrong and the honest thing is to say so rather than to ask for another quarter.
If you want a straight read on where you are now and what the next ninety days would realistically produce, we will look at it and tell you, including when the answer is that your money is better spent elsewhere first.
