Everyone asking how to rank higher on google maps is really asking about three things Google weighs: how close you are to the searcher, how well you match what they asked, and how well known you appear to be. You cannot change the first. You can change the other two considerably.
That is worth internalising before spending money, because a great deal of local SEO advice is really an attempt to fake the first one, and that is the part Google polices hardest.
Proximity: The Part You Cannot Fix
Results change as the searcher moves. Someone standing outside your door sees a different map pack from someone three miles away, and no amount of optimisation makes you the closest business to a town you are not in.
This is why checking your own ranking from your own office is misleading. You are the closest point to yourself. Check from where your customers actually are, or accept that the number you are looking at is flattering you.
The legitimate way to extend reach is to genuinely operate from more places: a real second location, a real service area you actually cover. The illegitimate ways, and they are common, are covered further down.
Relevance: Match What People Actually Type

Relevance is the gap between how you describe your business and how customers describe their problem, and it is usually wider than owners think.
- Primary category is the heaviest single lever. Choose the most specific one that genuinely fits, and check what the businesses ranking above you have chosen.
- List services individually. Each service entry is a matching opportunity; one paragraph describing everything is not.
- Write the business description for a customer, using the words they would use, not the words your industry uses internally.
- Answer the questions on your own profile. Unanswered questions are both a relevance loss and a bad impression.
The website matters here too. Your profile and your site should agree about what you do, and the page you link to should be about the service, not just the homepage.
Prominence: The Part Worth Investing In
Prominence is Google’s estimate of how well known and well regarded you are. It is assembled from reviews, from mentions of your business elsewhere on the web, and from ordinary organic signals about your website.
Reviews are the most direct route. Steady arrival matters more than a burst, and recency matters more than total. Twenty reviews arriving over eight months beats sixty that stopped two years ago.
Mentions matter too, and they do not need to be links. A local news piece, a supplier’s stockist page, a chamber of commerce listing, a sponsored under-11s team. Each one is evidence that a real business exists here.
Prominence is the only one of the three you can genuinely build. Most people spend their effort trying to fake proximity instead, and that is the one Google is actively looking for.

The Shortcuts That Get Listings Suspended
These circulate widely and they work until they do not. A suspension can remove you from the map entirely, and reinstatement is slow and uncertain.
- Keyword stuffing the business name. Trading as “Smith Plumbing” and listing as “Smith Plumbing Emergency Boiler Repair Leeds” is against the rules and is increasingly detected.
- Virtual offices and mailboxes. A registered address you do not staff is not a location, and competitors report these routinely.
- A relative’s address in the next town to appear in two map packs. Same problem, and it also splits your review profile.
- Buying reviews, or trading them with other businesses. Detection has improved sharply and the penalty lands on the listing you have spent years building.
- Marking yourself open twenty-four hours when you are not, to catch out-of-hours searches. This generates the one-star reviews that undo the ranking you were chasing.
What A Realistic Improvement Looks Like
Complete the profile properly. Set the most specific category. List every service separately. Add real photographs monthly. Ask every customer for a review, immediately, with a direct link. Answer questions and reply to every review. Make sure your details are identical everywhere they appear. Build one strong page for your main service and one for your main town.
That is not a clever strategy. It is a list of things most local competitors have not finished, which is exactly why it works.
Expect movement over weeks rather than days, and expect it to be uneven across the area you serve, because proximity is still doing its work. If you want us to look at why a particular listing is stuck, send us the business name and the searches you care about and we will tell you what we see.
