How to Win Near Me Searches for Your Local Business

Hiring From website, homepage on mobile

Near me searches are the clearest buying signal a local business gets. Someone typing plumber near me is not researching, and the businesses that appear in the map results at that moment take most of the work.

Winning them is less mysterious than it looks. Google weighs three things, and only two of them are within your control.

Proximity, relevance and prominence

Proximity is the distance between the searcher and your registered location. You cannot change it without moving, and it is why rankings differ street by street across a city. Relevance is how well your profile and site match what was searched. Prominence is how established your business appears, through reviews, links and mentions.

Because proximity is fixed, the practical work is entirely in the other two, and that is where most businesses have obvious room.

The relevance work that moves the needle

  • A precise primary category, matched to the service you most want to be called about.
  • Service items listing every job you take, in customer language rather than trade language.
  • A page on your own site for that service, in that area, that a searcher would recognise as relevant.
  • Opening hours that are accurate, including the out-of-hours availability people search for.

The near me part of the query is not something to put on the page. Google infers location from the searcher; writing plumber near me into your heading reads badly to humans and does nothing for the ranking.

People try to optimise for the phrase near me. The phrase is not the target. Being demonstrably the most relevant nearby option is the target, and those are different jobs.

Prominence is mostly reviews, and mostly recent ones

A steady flow of recent reviews signals an active business more effectively than a large number of old ones. Ask at the point of completion, make it a single tap, and never incentivise, because fake and incentivised reviews are separately regulated and the risk is entirely yours.

Respond to all of them. The reply is public, and the audience is the next person deciding whether to call you.

Why you rank differently across your own city

Checking your ranking from your office tells you almost nothing, because proximity puts you close to yourself. What matters is how you appear from the areas you want work in. If you serve three districts and rank well in only one, that is a signal to build a real page for the other two rather than to widen the service area on your profile.

The service area trap

Listing every town within an hour looks like it should help and generally does the opposite. A wide, vague service area weakens the relevance signal for everywhere in it. Set it to where you genuinely work, and win the extra areas by building pages that earn them. Our local SEO index covers this market by market, and the web design index lists the area and trade pages themselves.

What to check first

If near me searches are going to competitors, look at the primary category, then at review recency, then at whether a page exists for that exact service. In most cases one of those three explains it, and none of them require a new website.

Checking where you actually appear

The map result you see is shaped by where you are standing, so checking from the office tells you almost nothing useful. The practical test is to check from the places your customers are: a few points spread across the areas you want work in, ideally on a phone and while signed out.

Do it three or four times across a fortnight rather than once. Local rankings move around more than people expect, and a single check on a single afternoon is as likely to mislead as to inform. What you are looking for is a pattern: consistently absent in one district, consistently present in another.

Turning a gap into a plan

When a district shows up as a consistent gap, the answer is almost never to widen the service area on the profile. It is to give that district a reason to be considered relevant: a page naming the area and the corridors within it, work photographed there, and reviews from customers who mention it. Those signals are specific, and specificity is what the wide service-area setting lacks.

If several districts are weak at once and one is strong, the strong one is usually the district containing your registered address. That is proximity doing the work, and it is the clearest sign that the relevance and prominence signals need building rather than that anything is broken.
